You should also consider that for most of human history gay people were not allowed to be gay, they just had hetero sex like everyone else.

Gays could possibly contribute to the evolutionary fitness of the population

In addition, you are assuming that evolution is working towards some end goal of making humans better, optimizing people with each generation which isn't true. Gays are a very low percent of the population and are basically guaranteed to have brothers and sisters who will reproduce - so there's really no force working towards killing off the gay gene

also the non-hereditary answer, it's entirely possible for gays to be born from nongay parents, maybe there's no hereditary basis for homosexuality
