Actually, quite the opposite! My parents always comforted me about my body, and now I have problems with weight and bad eating habits, as well as some posture problems.

That's not the attitude the have. Regardless of your mental or physical appearance you are whatever you want to be. The only reason someone would try to tear you down is to build the self up. There is no other reason to berate someone then to try and give yourself artificial confidence

My parents should have done the opposite of what you're suggesting. They should have told me that those things you mentioned are crucial to success and happiness in life, and taught me how to reach my full genetic potential while my body and brain were still developing.

My lack of self-worth stemmed from a failure to achieve anything worthwhile at a young age. I believe my parents were too supportive at first (but in the wrong way) and this caused me to be satisfied with my mediocre accomplishments. I guess my parents were just proud that I got straight A's and assumed I would lead a successful life because of that, but other than academics I had nothing.
By age 15 I realized how utterly empty the rest of my life was. My parents, now divorced, had little time or money to offer the same kind of support they did when I was younger. Now that I had experienced this epiphany, I wanted to pursue things more meaningful than just academics such as music or some kind of physical activity but my parents now had no resources or care to fuel my passions as they once had. As a kid, I tried all sorts of random shit that my parents paid for but never stuck to it since I was a kid. As a teenager I truly wanted to pursue these things now, but the time had passed. I managed to pave my own path towards achieving some sense of meaning by getting actively involved in certain hobbies, but it would have been more effective if my parents were there when I really needed the support.
As a parent, I think I would instill in my kids at a very young age the value of finding purpose and make sure they stick to their hobbies, sports, and activities. I would be supportive but not be so to the extent that I would be exceptionally proud if they got like a participation award or something.

I think the minor things are a big deal as a kid. I want to show my boy robotics and programming and sports and everything I can and see what sticks and help him build himself up. I never got to pursue these things until I was an adult and although I'm behind people my age, it's really ease to access by working harder than them

Not to like absolutely spoil the child but to grow up without insecurities is the best thing in the world. Even the tallest, strongest most seemingly confident men can be brought to nothing due to insecurities. It can ruin their love life, their jobs their lives. But it can never bother someone who sheds themselves of it. If you are truly secure then you can't be brought down by anything other than death

I can't recall much but I don't think my parent's did too much to influence my body image either way. The most is my grandma saying typical stuff like "You look so skinny! Come eat." But other then that my confidence wasn't tied so much to my body image as it was my social interactions, which were mediocre at best.
