I'm a road NEET, aka vagabond.

Quit my job after saving 10 grand. Now I'm bumming around Japan as a start.

Why do you guys spend your time in front of a screen when you could travel the world instead?

Pictured; a volcano.

How easy is it to live like a vagabond? How do you make money?
>>
>>37100817
Yeah. She disowned me because of it.

>>37100860
Pretty easy if you don't fuzz about it. Sleeping in a tent and cooking over a fire is straight forward.
>>
Are you still here?

Tell us more.
>>
Because putting a new background on my same old useless life won't help
>>
>>37100766
do you speak the language? How do you get the courage to leave your hometown
>>
>>37101269
What do you want to know?

>>37101276
I'm learning as I go. And it was either go traveling or kill myself.
>>
>>37101264
what would you estimate the cost of living this way to be? any fun stories? how long have you been leading this lifestyle? this is something i've always been interested in doing.
>>
How are you paying for your expenses?
>>
>>37100766
What are your plans when you run out of money? How do you plan to stay in Japan after that? Isn't it very difficult to get a job there for a foreigner?
>>
>>37101348
I've budgeted around 1000yen a day. That can last me 3 years. If I don't smoke cigarettes, it's very easy to stay under budget. I just hitchhike for transport.

You can also do WWOOF'ing or WorkAway for more comfort in exchange for menial labor.

I almost became a cult guru because this old Japanese hand healing master thought I had powers. Got treated rather nice for a couple of days by her and her disciples until I got the fuck out of there.

I'm on my 5th month. Still have 6 years left on my passport. Heading to Australia or Canada after Japan.
>>
How much do you spend a day? did you travel to Japan or are you a native? how long do you plan on doing it for?

I've been thinking about doing something like this and did have about 10k GBP to my name before getting addicted to escorts and now only have like 5k but could easily save 1k a month if I quit.
>>
>>37101264
>Yeah. She disowned me because of it.

She disowned because you decided to go traveling?

You were probably better off.
>>
>>37101373
I have 10 grand on a savings account.

I take out around 300 bucks each month or so.

>>37101377
I'm not gonna get a job in Japan even though I've had offers. Got some contacts in Canada that can get me a job. Getting one in Australia shouldn't be a problem either. I'll supplement with that.

And if I'm all over screwed, I'll head back home.
>>
>>37101387

What about visas and travel costs to and from the country?

You can't just stay in Japan for ever without visa stuff, right?
>>
You're living the dream anon. I want to do this.
>>
Traveling is exhausting. I like going on trips but I can't imagine living like that all the time.
>>
>always with the J A p a m
>every SINGLE post about backpacking or moving to a different country on here is J A p a m
>never fails
>>
what happens when money runs out?
>>
>>37101399
I'm in Japan for a year on a working holiday visa. I'm here until January 18.

5 thousand pounds can easily last you two years if you're okay with hitchhiking and sleeping in a tent.

>>37101428
I didn't have to pay for a working holiday visa, only show proof of funds and fill in an application. Same for Canada AFAIK. You have to pay something like $400 for the Australian one, though.

But in general, money is not an issue. I can get a job in a day or two if I apply myself.

>>37101473
Just do it, mate.

>>37101485
It's only exhausting if you let it be exhausting.

>>37101491
I go back home, or get a job. I'll probably get a job before that happens, though.
>>
>>37101503
Surely there was more to the story about your mother disowning you. I don't you deciding to vagabond was the breaking point. It's convenient how you skipped over that post.
>>
>>37101415
What kind of job offers did you get in Japan? Are you skilled in something or were those jobs unqualified?
I want to move to Japan but everyone online says to stay the fuck away unless you're very skilled in something and have uni degrees. Is it really impossible to get unqualified minimum wage shit jobs for foreigners?
>>
>>37101619
It's a long fucking story. I'll try to keep it short.

>youngest of 4 kids
>move from cozy island to capital when I'm 13
>all my siblings moved out, only me and my mom
>mom is a giant control freak
>screws me up good throughout my teenage years
>get heavy depression
>I get into drugs
>start hanging out with the wrong type of people
>mom kicks me out when I'm 18
>live on the street for 6 months
>she offers me a second chance to redeem myself after she's seen me lose 60lb during my homeless time
>get a mattress on her living room floor
>find job
>start school again
>get my own place to stay
>never feel happy though
>5 years pass
>go to doctor
>diagnosed with stress, high blood pressure, and clinical depression
>deny drugs
>contemplate existence
>realize it's all my mother's fault for screwing me up gloriously
>tell her to fuck off out of my life
>contemplate suicide
>decide to go travel instead
>tell family I'm doing so
>mother tells me to not come back if I do
>okay.jpg
>pack my /out/ gear, /out/ has been a hobby since the cozy island
>now here

Yah.

>>37101634
I have 4 years of experience as a hotel receptionist, and 6 years of misc. part time jobs. My mother forced me to start working when I was 13 to pay off an imaginary debt that I'd accumulated with her. Didn't get my own salary till I was 18.

I've been offered jobs in hotels here.

Muh original comment.
>>
>>37101503
I want to do what you're doing with a unicycle. Buy myself a rugged 36" uni and just hit the road. Problem is that these cost a lot of money.

Did you go on any trial expeditions before you went? Anything you regret not doing before you left traveling related? Any must dos?

I'm thinking of maybe unicycling from Oslo to Stockholm as a trial run. I live in Oslo and I have family in Stockholm. I've also considered just doing sort of like a pilgrimage, walking or hiking or unicycling or whatever from Oslo straight to Akihabara, going through Estonia and Russia and taking the ferry from Vladivostok to Japan.

Sucky. Yet to get any. I blame it on still being fat, the Japanese have a strange fixation with twinky men.

>>37101728
I've had camping and hiking as a hobby for over a decade, so I kinda know what I'm doing. I regret not bringing a bit more clothes and an extra pair of shoes, as it's impossible to find my size here.

Just do it, man.

Thanks for sharing.

Anyways, I want to do something similar, but I have 6 months left in the hellhole we call military service. My plan is to hike the Appalachian, then maybe go to a different country or something. I have 20k saved up and should have 30-35k by the time I separate.

If you can, post your /out/ gear. All I have is a sleeping bag and pad, 40L backpack and titanium silverware.

Ugh. I wish I could. I wish I hadn't gone to university and accumulated all this debt that I'm going to have to waste the next ten years of my life paying back.

I told my parents I wanted to drop out for a while and do my own thing when I only had around 5k of debt. Accumulate some wealth, maybe explore moving out even if it wasn't a financially good decision for me to make considering I would drop out for financial reasons.

It honestly depresses me how many of my early years I've wasted. I'm 22 and sometimes I feel like my youth is over

How many miles/kilometers a day do you average?

What is your goal while living out in the wild?

Any strange encounters or stories?
>>
>>37101843
That actually makes me feel better anon, thank you. Maybe when I'm financially stable I'll rent a van or something and go on a roadtrip.

>>
The world is boring. Every country is a rehash of a rehash. Forests are forests, hills are hills, ruins are ruins, a city is a city. A road in Japan is a road in the UK. People are copies of each other. Why would I ever want to leave my bedroom?
>>
>>37101756
Do you feel lonely? What have you been doing for fun?
>>
>>37101969
I try not to walk too much with my backpack on since it's heavy as fuck, Japan is mountainous, and I like my knees healthy. Can hitchhike a hundred miles in a day easily, though.

I'm trying to find out what I want to do with my life.

Apart from almost becoming part of a cult, not much really.

>>37102013
I feel lonely some times. But that's part of it. I have to become at peace with myself.

I have my laptop and phone, so I shitpost when I have wifi or play Rimworld when I have electricity. Otherwise I read or fish.

A tree is a tree. A elm tree is different to an oak tree, but the basic model is the same. Bark, wood, leaves. Lots of trees make a forest. Ruins are old architecture. All ruins are old architecture. Some ruins are big, some are small. Cities are full of people. Every city is full of people. A city can have shops, libraries, art galleries, museums. Shops sell things. Libraries have books. Art galleries have pictures. The basic model is the same. Redecorate a house and it's the same damn house. Superficial differences.

You sound a bit similar to me. My mom was a psycho who killed my dad. I fucked off around relatives homes, till I got good jobs in IT and Tech. Lived in apartments while my depression and weight grew. Decided to say fuck it after I had to break my lease 25 days early and ended up with the full 3k lease breaking fee.

Im not renting ever again. Just going to do the van thing for a few years. Im saving up for it now (got 5k at the moment).

Im going to buy my own land, or die in the process. I just need to figure out now where I want to build a house.

Id like to travel the world and find a better place than the majority of the US, but I dont have the money and would probably get enslaved or killed or something. I have the worst luck with people.

Anyway, enjoy your days, Amigo!

Hello OP. I work and live in kyoto and i get a month's summer break late july to august. Would you like to cross paths some where along the way?

I can't sleep out in tents or carry a backpack that heavy so we probably can't travel together but we can meet somewhere along the way maybe.
