I was watching this movie with a guy one time and he had a theory about it. I think most people can agree that the very ending doesn't actually happen and it's just a representation of what Travis wanted to happen. But this guy had the theory that the only scenes which take place in reality in the movie are the scenes where Travis talks to his coworkers and the shooting scene. I don't know if I buy it, but it makes for some interesting interpretation.

If this movie was made today then the prostitute would be an adult who he ended up with in the end, he would have never tried to assassinate the president and his relationship with Betsy would have been a clumsy mess where she just couldn't take his goofy antics after being casual sex partners for a while.

Genuinely interesting and unique characters just don't exist in any entertainment. People can't comprehend what it's like to have odd beliefs and be disconnected from society. Mr Robot is a perfect example of a character that could have been interesting but instead they had to appeal to the kids with their relationships and girl troubles.
