Hitler feared a two front war between Poland and France/UK. In fact the border between France was greatly unmanned but the allies didn't launch a significant invasion. Hitler was advised that an invasion of Poland would not result in intervention from France and the UK.
Regarding Poland, Hitler had wanted a military alliance with them but Poland switched its diplomatic stance with Germany and wouldn't negotiate whatsoever about Danzig even when Hitler offered greatly favorable terms.
Their wars with the rest of Europe were necessary to defeat France and gain resources to fuel the war effort in the fight against communism.
They weren't universally despised either, the waffen ss was a pan-european fighting force which at its height was like 60% non-German
