It's so easy to buy ammo in my state.

The whole background check thing has stopped me before from going out to buy a gun because I knew it'd take days and for some reason that calmed me down, made me stop before I even started.

What state? I get my first gun at 14, a little 20ga. I've loved guns since I first shot one and was tickled red white and blue(manlier than tickled pink) to have one of my own. I'd recommend a handgun, it just feels more like anime to me when I'm practicing my draws.
