I actually did that with the girl I was talking about and at the last moment I chickened out. She could tell I had something else to say but I just said "later" and went to my car.
The feeling of defeat/regret was the fire under my ass that helped me to actually ask her out.

I had a friend who was a friend in every sense of the word he killed himself in 2013. It's really a shame that only in hindsight did I realize that he was probably my only true friend. So you definitely have something going for you, and you are lucky to know that you have a real friend that is still with you.
