Automation won't take over all jobs though. Imagine going into a store and not being able to spend money because all the machines are down? I work as a cashier in a store that also has self scan machines. Waiting in line to use them and watching people's pathetic attempts to do my job always makes my day. The machines frequently crash too. I got some free food the other day because I managed to do just that. I am sure the whole network could go down at some point and fuck it all up.

But I don't have that problem. I can ring up hundreds of dollars worth of food in minutes while your dumb ass talks on the phone. Amazon's RFID store idea might work, but how is that going to apply to a store like mine with hundreds of varieties of produce that needs to be individually weighed? Where dumbass customers mix and match produce in the same bags? Imagine the shrinkage lol.

That will never be possible in a lot of cases. It's not just the failures but the possibility of fraud. There has to be human oversight to ensure that isn't happening. Even with the human oversight in my store I'm sure customer dishonesty is still a huge problem. I could fill a bag with organic apples, take it through the self scan, and ring it up as regular apples. Who would know or care? How would a machine be able to tell if there were multiple varieties of apples also some organic in one bag? If it was totally automated how would security devices get removed too? That's another problem. Carding minors for alcohol purchases is another problem.
