What happens during your youth sets the path for the rest of your life. It's almost impossible to become successful later in life.

why should I have to put effort into my life? i never had to before magically turning 18

It's the result of them being socially isolated and wanting to fit in with the cool kids in high school.

Then when they get to college, drugs and alcohol are more available to them so they try to make up for lost time by engaging in all the shit that their peers got out of their systems years ago.

Most of the "nerds" and "loser" ish guys I knew in HS have stem degrees and good jobs now (I'm 22)

I did pretty well socially and am now a burnout minimum wagecuck living at home

Because 1) drugs are good for numbing the pain 2) some drugs (read: hallucinogens) appeal strongly to edgy kids who feel that their line of thinking doesn't fit with the mainstream 3) they do drugs in an attempt to try and fit in.
