8_chan doesn't have much going for it. /v/ and /tech/ are somewhat decent I guess, at least by the low standards of imageboards. Everyone on /a/ is a turbo-casual who hates anime, even more than here. /tv/ and /co/ are containment boards for people with severe untreated mental illnesses. I liked /cyber/ pretty well but it's almost abandoned now.

Lainchan used to be reasonably busy but not too busy, but has since bled most of its users, dropped the cyberpunk aspect, and turned into a left wing anarchist community. RIP in piss.

If you find comfy alternates and you run onto 4chan to tell everyone about them you're a huge part of what's more or less killed the entire culture. I kind of wish 8ch was the biggest imageboard instead of 4chan, both because their captchas are less cancerous and they allow inherent splintering, which chans more or less need to maintain any degree of quality.

I started browsing reddit because my hobby boards were being overrun with people constantly trying to bully others, to the point that it made them ignorant about the hobby itself. Smaller and specific hobby subreddits are good, better than 4chan. The front page of reddit is bad though, full of made up stories, political propaganda, or just things collected from twitter/instagram/tumblr.

Still come back to 4chan a bit though, if you have a reason to be anonymous you can't beat it because it's an entirely different atmosphere than reddit, with less censorship/circlejerks/puns and awful comments for upvotes.

Also didn't want to browse after learning Hiro allowed malicious/redirect ads on 4chan for over a year right after taking over and tried to act like he didn't know

I think for an alternative to work you would have to start with one or two niche topic boards with an active and creative fanbase.

Love them or loathe them, ponyfags have created their own active alt-chan over at ponychan and it's succeeded alongside 4chans /mlp/
I very rarely visit there so I can't confirm all their boards are active, but their Main boards seem to have tonnes of content.
