Even the parents know this. There was a case years ago when a kid drowned in a pool. A dude had seen the kid alone but not acted because he was afraid the parents would think he was a pedophile for taking the kid home. The parents sort of half-heartedly protested but in their minds they knew that if the guy had shown up on their doorstep with their kid, they'd be immediately suspicious.
