I feel like we are in a transitional period in human history where that traditional sense of community is transitioning into the digital world especially if you live in a industrialized city. If you live in a cosmopolitan city like NYC or SF, it seems increasingly difficult to experience that sense of community. While virtual worlds would be great in that they would allow you to overcome the limitations of physical distance to cobble together an ideal social group best suited to you, the problem is that you can always walk away at the drop of a hat. There's nothing to bind you together through thick and thin except your own devotion to the group, and that can easily be strained simply by group dynamics: not everyone in a group is going to get along with everyone else. It would be very easy to turn your back on someone when they need a lot of your time and attention. Without sheer necessity forcing us together, it's exceedingly difficult to find even a single person who will stick by you, despite how vital that is for everyone to have. I can only imagine that will get worse when people cease to have a physical presence in our lives.

On the flip side, I have to think that the disintegration of tribal social structures has meant that we're far less prone to narrow groupthink and irrational clannishness, and more inclusive and accepting of people unlike ourselves. In that respect it definitely seems like these groups are a relic of the past with no place in the increasingly globalized world of today, where unifying and collaborating on an international scale is more important than ever.

Sometimes I can't help but wonder if all progress ultimately comes at the expense of our collective mental health.
