a degree plays a big part in being successful and getting to a level above dead end jobs

You want to change. That's an important first step.

In this day an age the first step to prosperity is a good job. The only option that is free is to learn programming. Go to codeacademy and begin learning python or javascript. Then apply for hackathons and try to network with people, it's okay if you don't know much as long as you're open about it and wanting to learn more. You can make a good living programming as long as you have enough determination.
