you probably need a valid reason (authorized personnel, tourist, etc) to even enter the south korean side of the dmz area. if you somehow get there, you will need to cross to the north korean side of the dmz, which will get you shot, or get arrested and sent into the death camps to rot away.
if you're planning to go from the non-checkpoint area, enjoy getting blown up to pieces by the gorillions of mines, or get shot from one of the watch towers.
let's say that you managed to make it through an nigh impassable terrain, what will you do there? you will be caught by the nk police one way or another and to the death camps you go.

Why would I go to the death camps if I explained that I was defecting when questioned? There were a couple of other American defectors in the 50s, they were treated fairly. One is still alive today. there are some videos of him attending some event in the DPRK, I believe Kim was also present, he got to talk with high military officials

he sometimes has to do nasty watergate kind of jobs, one time he had to clandestinely raid some office to get video material related to NK IIRC, but it may have been that this was inside of the DPRK, but no idea why he got the job then, it was related to foreign journalists though

I think Kim sees him as a clown he can parade around and let him do shit for him he wouldn't / couldn't want to be carried out by official DPRK entities and as a symbol of course, he gets to live in luxury doing some speeches with journalists most of the time
