Anyways Canada is a land of contrasts. Nordic winters that give you frostbite, blistering summers that give you heatstroke. You have major cities like Vancouver and Toronto and Montreal that are all multi-ethnic and full of life and excitement and all sorts of different communities - and outside of that you have small-town shitholes where people having nothing to do but stand out in their front yard and watch the occasional car roll by.

If you're into outdoors stuff it''s great in the summer, there's plenty of national parks and beaches - but it's pretty much mandatory in the winter to go skiing or skating or something if you don't want to get fat and go insane from being locked inside & avoiding the snow and cold for like 7 months a year.

If you go to Vancouver, the winters are nowhere near as bad as the rest of the country, but it also rains a shit-ton and the summers aren't that hot. It's also very very extremely Chinese, I don't know if that matters to you either way.

I live in Montreal and every single year, every single winter makes me want to kill myself. The sun sets at like 3:30 PM and your eyelids freeze shut if you blink outside sometimes and there's constantly knee-high mountains of snow all over and you can't wear regular clothes, etc.

Sidewalks are pretty cool though, it's weird you don't have them. While we also have crime at night it's mostly confined to the dark parts of town if you know what I mean.Stuff is a lot cheaper here but it's been like that all my life so I don't really notice it unless I'm travelling and then it's a shock seeing what other's pay. It depends on your profession and the area but work is probably a lot like yours. If you work for a place you're expected to show up. Time off is included though, but it varies based on contract. I think you are. Does the SA government still provide that study financing? My friend used to have a rather generous handout. I believe it was on the condition that after graduation he was to work in SA for at least a number of years. (5 or so i think? Cant remember) Sounds nice.

And as long as you're open minded, friendly, you'll do fine. Especially college and university campuses are very used to foreigners from all over the world. Take your study seriously and take care of yourself, and you shouldn't need to worry at all.
