Well basically, many people don't know it but we are American. We are owned by the US and they decide everything that happens here. If they are rude to you chances are that they want independence and see white people as their enemies, I also want independence but I'm not a racist piece of shit. If anything. Basically, we would be forced to stop being lazy and do something, you would not believe how many people just get paid US funds to do nothing. I study using PELL grant and I understand it's unfair but I actually make use of it. Some of the "students" here have connections and they get the full pell grant and they don't even study. I'm not saying become enemies of the US but another reason why we can't move forward is because every product that arrives to this island has to be purchased on the US, if we are independent we can get products from other countries for way cheaper and get help from other countries aswell

English is not our main language. Both English and Spanish were considered official languages for a time, but that changed some years ago. Legally speaking Spanish is our first language, and English is classified as a second language. US tried forcing English down our throats for a while but it didn't really picked up.
