Do long distance relationships ever work? The girl I've been talking to online says she loves me and wants me to visit her, but is it a waste of time and money?

No, they don't work at all. You're simply playing the emotional and attentive roles that her real-life boyfriends won't fulfill.
Personally, I don't think LDRs work at all, it just seems too unrealistic, artificial. If you can make it work or at least meet up with them, all the more power to you, but I think in most cases what >>36422614 said rings true.

Talking from personal experience.
No, they don't.

Relationships are based on an exchange of give-and-take.
Guys need to STOP FUCKING SETTLING for being told nice things that makes them feel good. They need real, tangible results. Actual physical support, whether to give a social status boost or confidence-building intimacy, cannot be gained from fucking video skype.
Watch the movie "Her". That's how catfishing works. That's how all women treat LDRs. You will never be the only man in her life. She wants to keep a distance between you and her so she can have a stable of providers seeing to her every need without the risk of being (ugh) "real".
Please don't ever do a long-distance relationship with a girl.

I never had a long distance relationship, I never had a relationship at all, lmao.
A close friend of mine had like three LDRs, and basically I knew litteraly everything about those three LDRs.
And no, they don't work.
He menaged to meet IRL his third Long Distance gf, and yeah she was totally different IRL. (I was at the meeting too.)

I've never had one myself but I've heard many things and I know people who were in them. I'm sorry but no. The do not work. It is nice to think they work but distance kill relationships. U have to be close to that special person, in a physical way. At first It'll be wonderful and It'll feel like it can be possible but in the end they are not healthy nor possible if we think of long term :( srry :(
