When I was in high school in 2005 if you even knew what this word meant you were either studying English or frequented a Chan site like this.
It was actually nice to trade jokes with the 1/100 persons you'd meet who maybe knew.
A simple joy, something that expressed a unique part of life that we had a monopoly on.

The other day my little sister had a friend come over from school with "Peep" the frog on her binder.
They're in middle school.
They love memes.
They think memes are somehow related to social media.
