Put yourself in social situations that make you anxious. Speak to strangers etc. Join a local sports club or go to local bars you will eventually make friends.

Right, what you need to do first is make yourself presentable. Get a fresh hair cut, new shoes/trainers (you can tell a lot about a person by what they wear on their feet) find a few busy bars midweek that host things like quiz, beer tasting, whatever... Attend every week and I guarantee over time you will make friends. After a few visits you will notice the same faces and start saying hello etc. Look up local clubs in your area, football, baseball whatever interests you, even if you are shit at it. Clubs always meet up for drinks afterwards.

I have done it around 10 times and always manage to make loads of friends. You just need to put yourself out there. It's hard but worth it.
