just to make sure

find the differential of = finds the derivative of an expression

while

differentiate = find the rate of change at a point on the curve

can any maths anon help me out? I'm trying to document my shitty program for a project and I want to use the right words

yes differential and derivative are interchangeable jargon pretty much.
differential calculus = evaluating derivatives of functions
integral calculus = evaluating integrals (anti derivatives) of functions

okay thanks anon!

You're taking the same thing, derivative functions, just whether or not you leave it as a function or you have an X value you are computing for.

Don't say "find the differential of" to mean find the derivative, a differential is a related but different thing.

Oh? what's the difference

For context, I have a method that takes a function, and then algebraically finds the function which finds the rate of change of the original function at a point on the graph

When describing this, I said it "finds the derivative of"

I also have another method that takes in a function, and analyses the difference between to two points of a set distance apart in order to find an approximation for the rate of change of the curve between those two points

I described this method as "differentiating"

is this not correct?
