Major things I've noticed in Singapore:
- It's diverse but everyone is hanging out with each other, unlike here in America where people naturally clump up with their own ethnicity. Malays, cantos, taiwanese, indians, whites, and taochews all hanging out together.

- The streets are VERY clean, they put our nicer suburbs to shame. I didn't see any litter despite the "asian cities are dirty" meme. Their "chinatown" is clean too.

- People are outside at 3am, I saw women walking alone which is unheard of here.

- The night market is comfy and even a 29 yr old /r9k/ loser like me felt comfortable eating alone

First of all china can be a pretty cool place to live for wealthy foreigners. The cities have all the same things that American cities do.

Second, would you be happy living there, probably not. And yeah, your race does play into this. Chinese have an expectation for other Chinese to act a certain way, and while Chinese people who were born abroad are highly respected there, you frankly do not know shit about Chinese culture. Nonchinese foreigners who travel through or live in china will likely be treated more nicely than you would, because there is no expectation of them understanding Chinese culture. Even if you speak Chinese, your accent and stuff like that will always be off.

so, should you move there? I think it might be a good experience. Keep in mind nothing you do is positive, change is the only constant in life. It may open your horizons a little, it may be exciting to see where your parents came from.

So go. Spend some time with your grandparents. Have some fun traveling around the Chinese countryside. See how the rural Chinese live, see how urban China has developed.

I would say people in the Northeast are definitely more "cold" socially, people on the West Coast are kind of similar, but people in middle America or the South can be nice, almost too nice to the point where it gets to be annoying (t. from the northeast).
