Never alerted you when you had to level up, and you had to sleep to level up. Meaning if you got immersed, you;d be level one for about 50 hours.
Also, your choices at the start of the game dictate what you're going to be for the whole thing, really. Varying points depending on what skills you use, etc.

Annoying and clunky, overall.

I tried Oblivion a few times and never could get into it, but right now I'm in the longest playthrough yet. Did some mostly minor modding with Oblivion XP being the biggest game changer.

It's not Morrowind but I'm like 45 hours in and it's pretty nice. Starting to lose momentum now that I've finished the mages guild quests and did a whole lot of other quests. Thinking of beating the main quest and the expansion and calling it done.

Was thinking of replaying Skyrim with mods next but I don't know how much I feel like it. Does Skyrim have any good magic mods?

Skyrim has a few good magic mods, "Festus Krex inside out spell" is pretty good if you like gore and feeling powerful. Cast it and they explode into lumps.
