There's really not a lot of easily accessible, extremely reliable suicide methods for people who can't get their hands on high explosives. I've done a fair amount of research on this, and I've never felt like a shotgun is an ideal option. It's just too big and awkward - you don't want something that you can't control. That's why I feel like a .45 or a .357 magnum loaded with hollowpoints is probably best.

Most important factor to lethality is always lack of medical attention. You don't want to attempt suicide in a place where people can rush to your assistance. This would be my argument against bridges as well. A LOT of failed suicide attempts would have been successful if the person had gone out into the woods instead of doing it in their bedroom.
