It depends on who you are. I function fine on 4-6 hours a night but I know people who can't deal with less than 8.

6 or 7 is probably right on the money

It honestly just depends on your body chemistry. Some people can function perfectly fine on 4 hours. Other need at least 7.

You can function just fine on cycle sleeping of only 2 hour naps over a day though just fine. But really its mostly just what you're used to. If you are only ever used to say 8 hours, anything less isn't gonna cut it outside of rare times.

It depends, There are so many variables to this question that's impossible to give a single definitive answer. I think generally speaking though 6-8 hours of sleep is enough for most people.

It comes down to REM sleep. That's the state in which your body recovers and you really only need a couple hours of REM sleep but most people can't hit that level of depth until like 4-5 hours in. You can train yourself to access it earlier though so you don't have to sleep as much overall.

At the start of last semester when I was really motivated I only needed 5 hours of sleep and I was energetic the whole day. I felt like Donald Trump.

Everyone's brain is going to be different. Your body has a network of vessels known as the lymphatic system. Your cells poop and the lymphatic system disposes of that poop.

Your brain is different though. The lymphatic system is not present in your brain. While you sleep your brain is flooded with cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid washes over the neural cells collecting the poop which accumulates while awake.

The reason why your brain has no lymphatic vessels is because your neural cells need to be in a tight and specific configuration in order to operate properly.

Sleep debt is a thing, it's not that simple.

If I'm well rested, I can go a couple nights on 6 hours and be totally fine...past that it starts to wear down on me and I'm just tired all the time. Then I need to get a night or two of 9-10 hours to catch back up.

Unless I'm sleep deprived I can do 7 hours a night, sleep in on weekends and generally be fine. But if left to what's comfortable with no stress or outside pressure I'll get 8-9 hours a night.

6 is just not enough to maintain though, sure I can get up and function but I'm tired all the time past a couple days.

Anyway then depression and insomnia come along and everything's just fucked, can't sleep til 6 or 7am but nothing to get out of bed for and sleeping in is the only real pleasure I get for the day so forcing myself up before 2 in the afternoon is torture.
