Get a pencil and start drawing things in your house

Learn until you get ballsey enough for a pen or something

look on the bright side ic has better types of people compared to this hellhole

Read the books in the sticky, most people who say that did read them and grew to realize how mediocre they are, you should do the same
>>
>>35901219
>using 4chan for help or inspiration in artistic endeavours
You're doing it wrong OP

What do you want to draw anyways? What inspires you?
>>
I'm in the same boat, but realize everyone started out like this. Don't think just draw, do the exercises, do them again, and again, and again. Drawing is like rpg grinding.
>>
>>35901303
but isn't that just a big waste of time?
>>35901363
>what do you want to draw anyways
I have lots of stuff that I like the idea of drawing. Highly precise building designs, cute anime girls, and depictions of suffering and ugliness in nature are all things that interest me. I want to do it because I don't really have any way of expressing myself, and I feel I need something.
>>35901641
What exercises?

The ones from books mostly, like in the ic sticky. They teach you about visual awareness for example. You can't just draw, you need to exercise techniques.
>>
>>35901712
>but isn't that just a big waste of time?

no faggot, they teach a lot, plus they have tons of exercises in the books. You need to read them because there is no real other alternative other than going to uni. They will help you build a solid foundation of art
>>
>>35901779
>>35901820
which of the sticky books would you personally recommend? I hear a lot of people saying drawing on the right side of the brain is really bad.
>>
>>35901870
All of them, they're follow ups in your skill timeline. Drawing on the right side has bullshit brain science which you should ignore, but good drawing exercises that show results pretty fast.
>>
need an excuse to use my tablet and stop being an unmotivated piece of shit someone tell me something to draw.
also just draw, op. every day, just draw and most importantly have fun. if you enjoy it, you'll want to improve.
>>
>they claim to want to learn to draw
>they don't doodle grafiti, stick figures or straight up random shapes in a sketch book already

then you don't actually want to draw.

i gave up on drawing specifically because i needed a lightbox but couldn't afford one or didn't know how to obtain one.
i would get so frustrated because i couldn't see, i would just scrap my drawing and give up.

>>
>>35902049
I got a scholarship to two art schools, got initiated In this extracurricular school, took painting classes for nothing.
I just wanted to make drawings for video games. But art is singlehandedly the most masturbatory and faggoty thing people have to do, so when you get your feelings hurt about it, a place like /ic/ is spawned and people like me happen. There are forms you could go on that accomplish what ic accomplishes but keeps you motivated. DA is good, that forum by appleflinger is good. Idk man
>>
>>35902104
Historically it was the only point in time when there was a craft to painting and design. When it mattered then it became a big deal for the growing world a few hundred years later. The work they did wasn't perfect but it was pretty damn good considering where they were at and im autistic about it

I don't want to say that /ic/ is the best place for real critique but a few people know their stuff and if you're not cunt enough to get your feelings hurt by banter/shitposts even those posters say things that you can benefit from hearing as an artist
>>

Hey OP I like drawing and helping other anons get into it, post any work you've done and I'll talk about where you need to go. But first I need you to answer these questions:

>what's the thing you want to be really good at drawing

>do you want to do drawing as a hobby or career

>how willing are you to keep up daily drawing

I'm not saying at this point you have to do this, I draw a bunch and even I didn't keep up daily drawing in my early learning days I just put in what I felt I was having fun with. Here's some of my old stuff compared to my new, I've still got a long way to go but will all make it someday.
>>
don't bother learning to draw. you have neither the discipline, the motivation, nor the drive to improve. if you can't even improve yourself, how can you expect to improve your art? /ic/ doesn't need more self important wanks presenting their shitty sai drawings on a tablet daddy bought for them.

Aww.

I did some developmental art teaching classes in art school and figured the best way to teach fundamentals to children and beginners is to go straight to form and forget about detail. So: start with two things.

>1. basic linear perspective. Nothing fancy. Just put down a horizontal horizon line and slap two vanishing points on it. Draw some cubes. There are lots of tutorials online covering this. Linear perspective does get more complicated later but the basics are simple to grasp.

>2. Stick figures. Use stick figures as a start on anatomy and posing. Drawing a stick figure stand straight. Stick figure slouching. Stick figure running, sitting, crouching, jumping, etc. Do lots of those. Then instead of stick figures, use ovals and circles to make parts of the body instead of a single line. Repeat same process of poses. I like this technique because it quickly breaks beginners of the idea of going straight to detail; like they will look at the side of a person's face and start their drawing by meticulously trying to trace out the outer profile. That's bad and forms bad habits later, messes up proportion and perspective right from the start. Blocking in big basic shapes is the ticket. Then detail those in later.

then use shapes to block in more detail, start to incorporate actual anatomically correct shapes and you're well on your way.

This takes time though. Don't rush between steps.

1 don't expect immediate results, that's not how it works
2 don't take it too seriously, if you can't laugh at your own mistakes you won't get better

>>
OP nobody starts off amazing. Even Rembrandt and Schiele all started off like plebs like the rest of us, just they started off earlier is all.
I'm not saying I'm an accomplished artist or anything because I'm not, but picture related are all mine and the ONLY difference between the first picture and the second two are that didn't give up even though I believed I was shit (I'm still shit desu but I have better technical knowledge now).

If you're really interested in getting better, start now and start doing it everyday. Treat everyday as an opportunity for improvement and do your best to absorb everything you learn and it's impossible that you won't get better.

Don't let your dreams remain dreams, cuck.

Learn how to make a face, you can do it in like 3 minutes it's basically setting a couple proportion rules
Google some face reference
Get some drawing pencils an eraser and a pencil sharpener
Give it a go
Try to understand your mistakes the best you can
Try to correct your mistakes the best you can
When you are confident you have it a good try Google how to draw eyes, ears, nose, keep lips to basic because once you start moving the mouth around that's some other shit
Keep going until you are better
Start looking into shading
Start looking into drawing full body
Start practicing with different body positions
Try to incorporate some perspective

Also, whatever you do DO NOT try to begin learning from heavily stylised works like anime or you will cripple your foundations and that kind of damage is very hard to reverse.
>>
>>35904621
I'd say you've got some pretty good forms there, I feel like you can just about understand the 3D shapes but you don't know how to position them fluently but I feel as if your designs aren't grounded to earth enough, the problem with that picture is it's not easily recognisable to the viewer (I can tell its some form of mechanical robot) at this point you want to find a bunch of reference images to copy and draw inspiration from which fit closest to what your drawing it will make it recognisabilty far easier plus improve the realism to make what your drawing believable.

So in conclusion start collecting a bunch of real world reference images, use those as the base for your design, mix and match and you'll eventually pull out something cool.
>>

A machine, like a big old Rusty facotry machine
>>
>>35907491

Nope. You want almost entirely opposite of this list. Portrait is the most finnicky on detail and benefits the most from experience and solid grasp of the fundamentals. Full body form and perspective FIRST, then work towards details later.
>>
>>35907491
Add muscle and practice hands and feet
Stick to this and only this for a year
Your goal should be to be able to draw body's in a year

Stick to the face first and you can surprise yourself in what you can do a couple months from now, if you start with the body I can't even imagine all the ways you will get stuck along the way

Like 5 years old to 20, but the bulk of that was spent as a child who was still absorbing and categorising the reality of colour theory, shapes, lighting and shadows, gravity etc. If you're studying directly from adulthood you've already got a greater footing and are going to have the intellectual capacity to progress at a much faster rate.

Picture related is from when I was 16 though. You can tell I haven't really progressed much in the last 4 years, and the reason is because it was at that time I became depressed and pretty much stopped drawing completely. This is why consistency is important. Imagine where I'd be now if I had never stopped at 16.
