Let's go full autismo and consider your options:
'Talk to the QT'
-Success state (<1% chance): Gained date, massive life experience, massive morale boost, opens up future
possibilities for romantic relationship.
-Neutral state (~50% chance): Gained social contact, gained massive life experience, melancholic feels,
opens up new opportunities to talk to other qt's, neutral impact on feels.
-Failure state (~50% chance): Large affirmation of low self-esteem, exceeding sad feels, possible extra
bitterness, massive life experience.
'Do not talk to the QT'
-Success state (100% chance): Slight affirmation of low self-esteem, slight sad feels, no gained experience.
You'll want to expect a failure state in this case, especially if you don't do this often, but even there life seems
to go on exactly as it did before. The only difference is a nuance between exactly how sad you'll feel.
Honestly, I'd take your chances, can't get much worse than it is now, plus you'll need that experience if you
ever want to make things better.

Like, what?

The flirting isn't reciprocated and she ends up """friendzoning""" you. If you were even planning on
flirting and asking for a date and not just saying hi, that is.

But that's clearly failure

Wouldn't count it in the same realm as "go away, creep" myself, but if you feel it's the same ballpark
who am I to disagree.

One is more polite than the other, but in the end they are the same

I don't think so, you have to read between the lines (especially with girls) but there is a difference
between "I don't want anything to do with you" and "Keep it at a certain distance and we're cool".
Having female friends is a damn hassle, way more trouble than guys, but they're much better
for fixing dates and getting to know other girls. Could have its value.
