I think GOT went up shit creek due to the Red Wedding.

I mean each season grew in ratings but it was nothing huge, it was still a cult thing really, it was still considered "nerdy" by normies and not in a SUCH A NERD XD kind of way.

Then the Red Wedding happened and people were doing reactions to them and put them on Youtube and it blew up and normies were like "WHAT???? POPULAR VIRAL THING I AM NOT APART OF?? I MUST BE APART OF IT!!" and it blew up from there. Check the season 3 - season 4 ratings. During that break all the normies caught up to it. Then the producers saw all the new viewers and merch sales they got whenever they did something shocking and people posted reactions to it. It was free advertising.

So they decided to sacrifice story, cut down the characters because normies can't remember that many characters (I'm sure you've seen them say that one guy... uh, him. Whenever trying to reference a character because they don't know the names), and throw in as many 'SHOCKING MOMENTS' that are reaction worthy for youtube reactors to do.

And thus, Season 5 was born.
