I live in the UK.

I get 550 a month rent. The mortgage costs 360 a month. After insurance, and accounting for maintenance, I am left with about 150 a month. That is more than what my parents asked for in rent, because a bedroom costs about 120 a month around here.

Infact, it actually gets easier as time goes on. My mortgage was fixed for 5 years. In 3 years time, I may need to get a job again for 2 months so I can remortgage the place for another 25 years, and then my monthly repayments will be even lower (albeit over a longer term). I can also increase the rent price, to get even more money.
