Parents want me to go to my cousin's wedding
>800 mile drive
>have to get a hotel room
>have to get them a gift
>venue is at a casino
>one night then a 800 mile drive back
I like my cousin and I'm really happy for her but I can't help but see this as a huge waste of money and time for one night of fun. I've gone to three other cousin's wedding so far. Traveled 16 fucking hours driving to the top of Vermont, and all the way down to Key West for another. Both times I felt like I wasted my time. I probably spoke to my cousin MAYBE 30 seconds during that entire trip. They spent all that time doing their own shit and hanging out with their friends. I just ended up drinking with my other family members.
I haven't talked to the bride since the last wedding I saw her at, so years ago. I didn't get a personalized invitation, just one sent to my parents. Should I even bother or save my money? Have you traveled far to a wedding and enjoyed it enough to cancel out all the money you'd waste?

So often we feel compelled to do things just because it's the socially accepted thing to do. Normally this isn't bad, but routinely it'll blind us to certain things. Learn to silence the nagging tension that arises by reasoning it out.
What will change if you go, for them? For you? For your family? Are you doing this for them or your parents? What else would you be doing with your time?

I probably would be doing nothing and save my money. I recently saved up enough money to move out of my parents house and would set me back a bit. I can imagine at least $200+ for travel, gas and a rental car since I don't want to drive a stick shift on the interstate. Then I need to think at least 2 days in hotel... maybe an extra $150 for that at a really cheap ass hotel? Finally a gift which I think I'll just do $50 in cash.
Is two nights of fun worth two days of driving all day+$400?

That's the question you ask yourself. I am a 30 year old male who quit my day job to pursue drawing comics, a single night of fun driving 20 minutes for $10 is still not worth it to me, there are other pursuits I must dedicate my time to in the 20,000 days I optimistically have on this earth. But if I were younger with more disposable cash and a lighter perspective on life and have never experienced a wedding before, I would go.

Get the money from them, or just send a gift to your cousin and be done with it.
