I think it is a typical female projection of(her own) traits unto men she finds attractive an men she doesn't find attractive. All the things she doesn't like she sees in the 'beta' and all the things she likes she sees in the 'alpha'.
There is some consistency in her attempt to synthesize all these traits(corresponding to her only two emotions, smugness/love and fear), but as is always the case with women, the ideal is not herself, but a male partner for her to rely on.
She dreams up this strong, numale character in her mind, one who embodies her ideal of passive acceptance, but in reality she wouldn't be attracted to someone like that. She would want to turn the attractive 'fear'-driven(in her mind) man into her ideal, but if she ever succeeded the attraction would cease. She would hate herself for it, and maybe blame some external force, wishing that she really could like 'good', 'alpha' men.
As always it can be said, that all the problems of women are entirely their own fault.
