I'm going to take a wild guess and assume you're not autistic, but merely a shut-in with precious little socialization history. Interacting with other people in a way that is appealing to them is a skill just like anything else, and you have very little experience in that skill. You're competing with people (Chad) that have been practicing this skill their entire lives. Obviously there are factors that make it much easier to "succeed" because mistakes are overlooked, and conversely there are factors that make it much more difficult to succeed because mistakes are scrutinized.

In other words, you really do have to talk to other people/women to understand how it works unless you're a megachad oil prince.

both of the above. School psychologist diagnosed it in grade school. my parents didn't believe him and took me to some other doctor they found, who said basically the same thing.

I had to learn a lot of stuff by rote (facial expressions, look people in the eye, non in the mouth, etc) and once I started doing that I realized that the expressions and tone of voice and stuff that kept turning up when I talked to people were usually the ones that went with "bored" or "annoyed". I talked to people a lot less by high school.

that was well over a decade ago so I guess the game's long since over.

Well I taught myself small talk well enough to get by in the world. I wouldn't say I'm great at it, and I still don't like it, but I can do it, and apparently come across as a normally polite person. And I'm fine talking to people about work, a school assignment, or something like that.

But flirting and romance seem to work by completely different rules that I can't figure out. It probably doesn't help that I have to try and avoid talking about things I'm actually interested in.
