old deviantart was pretty good, blogger is dead and sites like acidcow. , thumbpress. platedjeans, bored.com remind me of old internet for some reason. Tumblr is a shit hole but it was good when it was first launched same thing goes with twitter and facebook
>>
>>35755005
Two things
First being you were younger then, so everything was new and wonderous. Kids these days think the same thing about our internet and in the 2020s will be like why was 2010s internet so good?

Second was it became more normie. Sites normies on the internet used in the early 2000s was like google, aol and yahoo. It was mostly a robot thing or a kids thing. Hence why there was a lot of sites appealing to kids, or a lot of cult following type sites.

A lot of people, at least on R9K say that 2007 or 2008 would be the years they'd give where the internet kind of changes, websites changed to appeal normies, normies were all over the internet then. So that'll be the other reason. In the late 2000s, due to easier accessibility of the internet, the coming of wifi and smartphones and cheaper internet and faster connections, the internet became more accessible to normies and it wasn't just a thing kids or robots used. As such, websites appeared or changed to appeal to that.

By 2010 everyone was using the internet, it became that widespread.
>>
old movie websites were pretty good like thecrow.com I miss those oldschool pop ads for some reason It's funny because I used to hate them

What a time to be alive. It's hard to think we haven't reached the pinnacle of culture and human experience. WE lived during the apex. We might not see another golden age of culture for hundreds of years.
>>
>>35755119
Yeah I was fine with sites like Digg and Reddit and 9gag taking memes and appropriating what 'memes' are because it didn't really leak into here. It was just way over there, away, you know?

I'm even fine with 4chan becoming a bit less weeb than it used to be, it's inevitable with the none Japanese and anime boards.

What sucks is how there are less raids, those were fun, and how they've changed. They're now politically spurred or used to forward an agenda. We take sides now. Before it was just 'for the lulz'. Anyone was a target, the point was the fun.

But it's not just 4chan with the politics thing, its all over the internet. Everyone just seems into politics now. Compare that to the 2012 election. 4chan was still around, twitter was still around and Facebook was still around, but the politics stuff wasn't half as bad.

It just baffles me, and its a change to the internet that I find weird that everyone feels the need to share their political opinion as if anyone cares, and they feel the need to talk about politics all the time. Arguing about politics on here and on twitter is weird for me too. Like who gives a fuck about Fucko Joe from half way around the whole and his political opinion?

I don't get why people are so set on arguing and trying to change a complete stranger's political opinion. Someone who they'll never talk to again in 15 minutes. Especially on here, an anonymous image board, you don't even know who the person is and some people get into such a rage about it like "I CANT BELIEVE THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT POLITICAL STANCE THAN ME" and go into massive hour long arguments with a person they don't know and will never see again.

These people know that people are set into political ideologies so it's pointless. They know they're not gonna change their opinion so why do it?

It's why I've stopped arguing with strangers on the internet in general. You're not gonna see them ever again in 10 minutes time.
>>
Youtubes poops were good and the best thing on internet. Also this thread has some good old internet stuff http://rx.vyrd.net/988240.html
oh yeah and crazyshit.com
TMNT was the fucking bomb back then
>>
>>35755259
It's even worse on 4chan. I can understand arguing on youtube or leddit about your political agenda because the user has a online name, persona and reputation. But this is a fucking anonymous imageboard. The weeb days were really good mixing anime and memes together made some really good shit. The reason why people argued on 4chan back then was because it was fun to mess with some hence "for teh lulz"
>>

Kongrate was epic. I remember in school everyone would sneak in copies of CS 1.6. I also miss old south park it has suffered with seasonal rot and it died with the release of season 20 when all they did was talk about PC culture and politics like shut the fuck up nobody cares about that
>>
>>35755287
Back in 2012 you'd just ask someone who they voted for, they'd say and people would be like "Alright cool"

I think whats changed is social media cultures become embedded in everyone, and how news outlets have changed. The focus is on 'Let your voice be heard' it's all over social media and news. 'Say what you think, we care, let everyone know!'

So now people have this idea that their opinions are important and all of their opinions must be shared, that they must shout it out. So its just lead to this new culture of people thinking their opinions matter and their opinions are the right ones.

Old computer viruses. They don't seem to be a big thing these days because people are more aware of viruses and aren't dumb enough to click e-mail links anymore. At least in work and school at least.

But honestly some of the 90s and 2000s viruses were pretty fucking scary because they were about wreaking havoc and destroying your computer. Nowadays all it seems to be about is stealing passwords and information and shit really. Just trojans and keyloggers, rather than all out mayhem.

Yeah I remember back then I used to panic when getting viruses. I don't now. In fact I haven't gotten a virus in years.

I dunno if its that I have good anti-virus stuff and I'm more aware of how to avoid them, or if viruses aren't much of a thing now. I don't think its the latter as I'm sure there's dumb ass old people who still get them, but they still don't feel as deadly anymore, just stealing information.

Meanwhile way back in the 2000s there used to be entire offices shut down by a virus, entire schools, even entire cities due to computer virus 'epidemics' they were called.

>Sites normies on the internet used in the early 2000s was like google, aol and yahoo.
Some normies also used news sites and maybe forums. There were also plenty of younger normies on social media.

One more thing that changed the internet in the late 2000s and early 2010s was touchscreens becoming mainstream. This changed the design of most major sites.

>Trying to recreate the experience of the old Internet with things like Archive.org just feels like visiting a cemetery
Fuck this hits me. I don't subscribe to the "the internet is completely dead and there will never be another golden age of content" claim that is constantly espoused but looking at the past I wonder if we can ever top it, if the content creators of now are even as youthful or vigorous as they once were, and if the current generation is up to the challenge.

I can look at content produced by the "modern" internet and be amused or downright amazed at times but something feels missing. It's the same feeling you get when you play a modern video game but then wonder how you had more fun with games made with worse technology. Wherever you look it feels like there is a deep stagnation of culture and I don't believe it has everything to do with not being a kid anymore.
>>
>>35756997
Modern Internet is completely commercialized. All those people from the old Internet who made Flash games/animations did it completely out of pure interest.
>>
I feel like social media is to the internet as the railroad is to the wild west, am I wrong?
>>
>>35757150
I don't think it's completely out of the question for that old style of internet to revive in some form where people worked out of an interest to build communities and create funny content simply because it was their interest/hobby, in that sense I'm more optimistic than most people. But for that to happen enough people have to want it. There has to be a clear goal and a fresh batch of energetic people who know what they're doing. I've seen a few attempts already but they died out before gaining traction, which leads to my next point.

The difference between the old internet and the new internet isn't talent, but effort. For every one decent content creator there are ten copycats and a thousand reposters (I mean this as a general rule, applying not only to 4chan). This was actually common knowledge before when content aggregators first became a thing.

So we're left with a situation where there are few content producers and in an already heavily restricted environment compared to the old days.

>>35757151
You're not wrong, but I wouldn't say they have been complete cancers on the internet. I will probably get shit on for saying this but Twitter has done more to produce content and fling normies out of the dark age of "meme generators" and what not than Facebook or any other social media ever did. People who think 4chan is still independent from this growth are completely delusional, and it will be seen what it means for the future of the internet and good content.

It's that if you create content, you gotta do it for money. It's also difficult to get your stuff out there now that corporations have arrived to over saturate the place and drag people down.

Before people did it as a hobby, to share stories and to improve their skills. Now stuff as simple as playing games on the internet is for money rather than interest.
