Problems with stuff like the OP picture is that the legs are completely straight, that's not how actual bipeds have their legs set, they're a bit slanted. Also the weight isn't just distributed in a particular way, and the spine allows it to balance that said weight.
So yes, it takes a lot of work, fine tuning, and complex algorithms, just to basically walk on two legs, on a flat surface.
