I know it's only been brief, but the last I heard any of reports of the guy feel like an entire age ago. As if he's gone the way of the Kim Dynasty. Retreats to his own leisures and pleasures, and let the rest of the government take care of matters. There was that thing with Merkel, but still he seems to be dodging the media spotlight more so than before. I miss him...

Either the media or Trump are preparing for something really big, but maybe people just lost interest and got tired of saying "lol FUCK DRUMPF AMIRITEGAIZ?"

Just a little more absent. Still raging hatred from almost every angle in the MSM.

The liberal media is still embarrassed about the tax returns thing

As his ties with Russia and the invalidity of his Obama wiretapping claims become more apparent he has less of a desire to show his face on tv.

he literally met with merkel yesterday. it was all over the news. like every other day, he did a bunch of stuff that ranged from actively embarassing to probably overblown, a bunch of people had strong feelings about it, /pol/ jacked off to the press photos from the event, various cadres of leftists burned them in effigy

there were whole months of the obama admin where you'd hear basically nothing important out of him. it's not that he wasn't doing anything, it's just that there wasn't some pressing need to care about what the president was doing on a day-to-day basis because people were more interested in some thing or another

the first couple of months of the trump admin have been completely bananas and that's something pretty much everyone can agree on. he spent so long overloading the news cycle with all of the weird shit he was doing, saying, etc. that any moment of respite from the trump media circus feels like a substantial period of time has elapsed

even if he (or what he represents) is the most important thing happening to america right now it's still not a tenable mass media strategy to run 24/7 trump coverage

trump is always doing stuff, as you have to do when you're president. whether there are 10 cameras at whatever he's doing or 100 is fairly immaterial

also now with more of his cabinet in place, attention has shifted the the weird things those people are up to. whereas before it was easy to make trump get up and talk about healthcare or something, now we've got mulvaney and price to give all the inflammatory soundbites

the main thing the trump thing has shown me is how much of the internet is truly new to politics. how much of /pol/ do you think had 2016 (or maybe 2012, which was unbelievably subdued) as their first voting election? there's a lot of ways in which what's going on now is completely abnormal to the point of absurdity, but there's also a lot of ways in which what's going on is not necessarily a new thing

This. This so much. It was the same issue I had/have with Bernie voters, they're way too impassioned to know what the fuck is going on.

the bernie thing is a little more complicated since that dude's been an anomalous feature of american politics for such a long time but i think you're basically right.

there's definitely segments of the bernie supporting population who were legit socialists/DSA folks who saw the insane amount of online traction he was getting and thought "well, i guess we gotta give it a shot." these people never trusted the democratic party or its mechanisms and pretty much assumed from the start that his bid would fail, but that any amount of left-shift in the democratic platform would be a good thing (this, btw, didn't happen). this is my home turf, so i probably saw this more than others

then there's the much larger portion of the bernie crowd that arose from basically the same thing as the 2008 obama campaign: really young people on their first election cycle who genuinely believe they are part of a legitimate shift in the nature of american politics and thus justify their irrational passion for their candidate. i think these people genuinely thought he had a chance and were crushed when the most predictable non-incumbent DNC nomination in years actually happened.

there's also a portion of these people who basically heard about bernie from retarded internet people/their idiot friends and processed his whole thing as "this guy hates the establishment! he's so anti-status quo! i want him because fuck 'career politicians' lol!" (even though bernie has cashed a paycheck from the us govt for most of his adult life). these are obviously the people who made the bernie -> trump flip, and though they tried to justify it with the whole "the DNC screwed bernie so we must punish hillary!" thing, it was always about some kind of fuck you message to "the establishment" for these people

it's all kind of funny in retrospect because a lot of the "youth coalition" that popped up around obama in 2008 became increasingly disillusioned with him as his term wore on. they showed out for him because they thought he represented a "progressive" take on politics as usual and that the whole "change" thing was more than a meme. obviously it turned out obama was actually a fairly hawkish moderate who tried to do the whole "bipartisan cooperation" thing and got completely railroaded by the GOP (hence, the ACA being the shitshow that it was, guantanamo remaining open, etc). the obama admin tried to toe the line between advancing its agenda and avoiding outright antagonism of the other side and the other side just didn't give a shit. as a general rule, republicans seem to understand that politics is EXCLUSIVELY about power a lot better than the democratic party does

but the thing about all the young people who genuinely believed obama was going to be some black lefty saint is that if you listened to the substance of ANYTHING he said, that was CLEARLY not who he was. ever! in every speech he painted himself as exactly the dude he ended up being and people fell out of love with him because he didn't match up to this projection of a "progressive" democratic president that the nascent "millennial" voters thought they elected

the fact that bernie lost means that the new wave of naive young people didn't get to go through that process of disillusionment with bernie and thus get to continue another 4-8 years feeling like "revolution" is realistically achievable in this country
