Even just being within the same city, or having convenient ways to contact them (text message, Facebook, etc) can be one, long, unending nightmare that leaves its mark on you, even for years after the fact. And can easily drive one to extremes such as suicide (as it almost did me the last time a person friend-zoned me).

TL;DR: It's a horrendous heartbreak -- and continually seeing them only either keeps it going and going for endless periods of time, or gradually becomes worse. It then starts to be the best move to put a distance between you two; otherwise finding closure and moving on is plainly impossible.
