Intelligence in the past I mean before civilization was a sign of weakness, therefore it was bread out. With society though and seatbelts.. everybody gets to breed! It comes down to what's selected for. Humans are a super organism so things get a little messy since there is a lot more social stuff happening.

Women have birth control and the sexual revolution. Many don't want kids until her eggs are rotten so they pursue their ideal mates instead of what's good. This typically means they go for antisocial types. I think stupid people have less inhibition and act more boldly. They experience less self-doubt or awareness of the consequences of failure.

In a state of nature, these people would likely have been killed or suffered accident due to their carelessness but not anymore. Civilization protects them from the consequences and thus they don't have to face the downside of their behaviors.

This makes having children much more expensive, meaning only 1 or 2 is a good idea.
