start telling them about how you have begun sorting your miscellaneous screws and bolts into jars depending the drive, size, and thread pitch of the screw. tell them about the different varieties of screw drives - sure, everyone knows phillips and stanley, and maybe torx and allen, but what about JIS and robertson? canadians love robertson screw drives because it was invented in canada. ikea furniture mostly uses pozidrive, though few people have a pozidrive screwdriver, so the result is a lot of stripped screws from fitting a phillips head screwdriver in there.

what is the purpose of different screw types though? is it just an organic growth of the industry resulting in different competing screw types, or do the different screws have different strengths/weaknesses?

different screw drives have different strengths. for certain applications, you want to be able to apply very high torque (torx, for instance) for other applications,you'd prefer the screwdriver just slip out if you try to torque it down too hard (phillips).
