Learning Spanish to a good level takes a long time. You just have to keep at it, and spend a lot of time reading and practicing. You can do it.

It may take a long time, but eventually you'll be able to at least have conversations (order at a restaurant, ask a girl on a date, read a bus schedule, you know, basic stuff at least).

If you learn Costa Rican Spanish you don't have to. Tons of Costa Ricans just pronounce "r" and "rr" like American English "r".

If you talk Tico-style, it all works out though. You could even sound like a native Tico if you learn the rest of the dialect and keep practicing.

I had it done. The first surgeon botched the fuck out of it and it caused me sleep apnea, chronic pain, facial swelling, jaw tension, and difficulty eating for months until I went to a different surgeon to fix her horrible, ham-fisted botch job.

I can roll the fuck out of my r's now, but that's after THREE surgeries, tons of pain, and over a thousand bucks spent. Unless your frenulum is making it hard for you to keep your teeth clean or breathe or speak...don't get the surgery. Not worth it just to roll your r for Spanish, especially considering not all native Spanish speakers do it either.

If you insist on it, as far as I'm concerned there is ONE surgeon you should consider, and one surgeon alone. Dr. Scott Siegel. He saved my tongue. It was a goddamned deformed scarred up mess after the earlier surgeon mutilated it. At least I can breathe and talk again.

Would not recommend unless you have other issues caused by your frenulum. But if you're going to do it (either because you have an actual medical issue or you just REALLY want to roll those r's, regardless of my horrible experience) I say go for Dr. Siegel. He knows what he's doing.

Go to a "regular" surgeon and you could easily wind up far worse off than you are now.

My jaw got so tense from her mangling of my tongue muscles that my teeth cracked and my face swelled up. I couldn't talk and I looked like a literal Keebler elf for almost a year.

No, not really. It's common for different second-language Spanish speakers speak different dialects of Spanish depending on a lot of factors (like whom they learned from, the countries they're most interested in or have visited before, or yes, even because they find that dialect easier to imitate than other ones).

All Spanish dialects are mutually intelligible so it's not a problem if you learn Costa Rican Spanish and then go to Spain or Mexico something. They will understand 95-99% of what you say.

Costa Rica is also a really awesome country to visit and Ticos are by and large friendly people. It's not perfect but it's nice--and actually better in terms of quality of life, safety, etc. than some parts of the US.

If you have the chance to visit Costa Rica I highly recommend it.
