They're fun to play. They're fun to watch when you understand the tactics of nuances of whatever sport it is.

Plus there is something awe inspiring about being part of a community rallying behind a sports team if its on a run. Its not even about the sport at the point, it gives you this intense feeling of togetherness for something greater that borders on religious fervor.
