>drop it on the ground
>goes black, won't turn back on
>try to charge it
>goes to charging screen, apple logo, back to black, and repeat cycle
>unplug it and it just stays completely black
>plug it back in and it repeats that annoying cycle but won't actually turn on
>try to hold the power and home button simultaneously for 40 seconds like is suggested online, both while it's plugged in and while it's not

You have probably knocked the connector for the battery loose. If you are repair savvy, check the battery in your iPhone. If not. Get it repaired/replaced.

someone else suggested on a different thread that the battery itself may have been disconnected or damaged. what are the odds of that vs what you suggested?
