Depends on how you use it. Just ignore the front page/all and subscribe to subreddits you actually need, like the ones for homework help or something, or the ones for a specific and obscure hobby. And of course, porn subreddits are cool.

Exactly, it is by far the worst place to have a normal discussion. The saddest thing is most redditors think its the opposite.

When I have browsed it for 7 years now (5yr old account) and have seen so much recurring reposts nothing seems original anymore. I still browse subs like /r/writingprompts, the stories on there are cool.
