He's trying to show that when you move out and room with someone this is how life is going to be. If you can't afford it all the time now it's ok, because he's your dad, but when it's not your dad it won't be ok.
If you are having a hard time affording it this is a good time to try and figure out how to make more money (more hours, negotiate a better wage, get a different job) and budget accordingly before your life actually depends on your income
