Blame city government for making shit so expensive in the city. Their regulations make it prohibitively expensive to build new shit, so that the land owners can extort tenants.
And city government isn't "free market capitalism." It's literally land owners using a government to inflate the value of their property. Otherwise, people would try to buy property to build a 20 story building filled with 100 apartments per floor, so that they could make a shit ton of money each month.

I can't speak for you OP because obviously you dont live in vancouver, but I live in the tri-cities area surrounding to vancouver and transit to and from downtown is extremely cheap. See if your city has any kind of universal transit pass system to help you out with paying for transit, because there's no way it should be costing you $600 a month even if you ride it daily.
