I'm 26 and currently doing a degree. I'm not even the oldest guy on my course.

There are two layers on the "too old" thing.

1. you are too old to be in tune with everyone else doing the thing you're doing -- this will look and feel weird and make people uncomfortable and it's a little sad.

2. it doesn't matter how weird it feels because you want to do the thing anyway, and late is better than never. you may have missed your chance to do it 'right' but you don't want to die without trying.

Just don't make it gender studies, and it won't be wasted.
