Why is /a/ so elitist about anime?

Because they view it as a niche interest still, while in reality anime has been gradually becoming more mainstream.
As a result, to prevent an onslaught of people who don't fit in with the original audience of outcasts and losers, they become elitist to make them leave, and keep their interest somewhat like it used to be, with a board dedicated to them. It's a backlash against who they perceive as the intruders ruining their niche interest. You've seen the same thing with gaming in the last couple of decades, no doubt.
It's the same reason why this board doesn't want normies here, it dilutes the product.
