I like both for different reasons because I live in a medium sized city. when I want to blast my shit and go nuts I like manual but when I want to go to work and not really think about shit, I take my ancient toyota that can last forever to events or as stated (work) or whatever.. wake up nigga

Stick shift is a very outdated form of driving. It's very unsafe. If something dangerous happens on road most stick shift users will end up hurt because their mind goes blank when they panic.

have you even driven a modern car? almost all of them have a way to shift gears, even my fucking mothers station wagon has paddles
>>
>>35159395
>While most europeans drive with stick
The stick shift actually makes you exploit the car's strenght at its best in situational cases, also makes you dose the most efficient amount of fuel, always if you think while driving.
>>
>>35160020
the fuel thing is not an argument anymore, computers are better than humans now at switching gears for fuel efficiency.
>>
>>35160020

I prefer stick but the benefits aren't amazing
>can drive low gear in bad conditions to help control speed
>pop out of gear on downhills for fuel economy
>pop start car if battery is low
>if you need to slow down quick you can put some strain on the clutch and downshift

But there are drawbacks too
>rolling back on hills sucks
>can stall in the middle of an intersection if you forget how to clutch
>an old clutch can start slipping on you to the point of transmission failure (only if you dont replace it long after it starts to slip though)

Its a cheaper transmission system to maintain though and often the cars are sold cheaper because there are less buyers
Plus its a good way to keep your hands busy while driving and not passively drifting off (highways will always have that issue)

Why would I ever want a manual if the only thing I use my car for is to go to work and run errands? Driving isn't fun. A car is just a tool to get to point A to point B. Control, engagement, the experience, cheaper to repair and maintain. Only driving to work or running errands doesn't make these advantages irrelevant.
>Driving isn't fun
Your opinion. You don't need to have your head buried in a screen for something to be fun.
>You're not fucking drag racing
I'm also not retarded, which is why I don't associate changing gears manually with "drag racing".
>I'd rather just have a hand free to adjust my music or take a sip of coffee
Competent drivers can do so regardless of the transmission type. Changing gears only requires a quick flick of the arm, provided you're not an invalid. If you can't handle that, autotragics are perfect for the disabled and elderly.

Retards of the year right here.

The new Camaro SS is a prime example of the Manual becoming obsolete. There's even a video on YouTube comparing a professional drag racer in a manual vs the a normal person in the automatic, and the professional didn't win a single time.

On top of this the automatic gets 1mpg better than the manual. It's faster, and more efficient. Manuals died in 2016, and there is no reason aside from personal autism to own a manual in the year 2017.

He is right about that part, automatic gearboxes frequently shit themselves at around 100k miles if the gearbox oil isn't changed (many manufacturers claim they are "sealed for life" and don't need doing).

For some reason manual gearboxes don't break unless you really fuck with them. Clutches should last at least 150k miles but it depends how the previous owner treated it. My ancient BMW 328i is on 220k miles and still on the original clutch. Works perfectly, all the automatic ones have been replaced by now.

Yes, however almost everyone learns to drive in a manual so passes their test in a manual car. Obviously if you do this you can drive automatics too.

If you pass in an automatic you need to sit your test again in a manual car if you want to drive one. If you don't you are restricted to automatics. Automatic = 2 pedals so all these DSG / DCT etc cars are fine despite their owners claiming they drive a manual car.
>>
>>35167896
Probably, is there a difference between the stock 3 and this speed3, and is the Mazdaspeed3 really Type R level fast?

Automatics feel like shit unless you're sitting on a lot of fucking horsepower and torque, if you legitimately want to be involved in your driving and see it as more than an appliance manual is a logical and fun choice.

Not to say automatics can't be fun as fuck with around 350Nm+ of torque, but you're just missing out on a lot of potential fun.

An automatic will cuck you and shift up at high RPM
Working the clutch means that you modulate the torque from the engine to the wheels using the clutch, this keeps you with a good amount of torque that you can use to get out of a ditch or something.
An LSD will also help this.
Think of it as rolling in an auto, no gas but you still move.
It's also useful for parking and creeping in traffic

Don't tell me that you drive like a perfect little goodie boy that obey the traffic rules to 100%, you'd just be lying to yourself.

Driving tests are meant to drain money out your pocket by having some perfectionist retard sitting next to you telling you that you'll have to re-do the driving test because you turned two degrees too much to the right while parking or some shit.

I thought I preferred stick until I got an automatic.

My first car was a stick shift and it was great to me but then when my car finally got to the point of unusable and I actually tried an automatic, it was just so much better. It was effortless, it was so smooth.

I see absolutely no point in stick anymore personally, I just don't. The only valid argument I've seen thrown my way is it's just more fun to use a stick because you feel like a race car driver. Good for you if that's the case but I don't give a fuck about that after the novelty wore off 2 months into owning my first car. I just want a car that gets the job done and automatics are true to their name, it's just objectively more efficient to get things done.

It's not that fucking hard
I don't understand the issue
Shift up at like 3k
clutch in shift to Nuetral on stopping
1st then move when moving
on the highway rev up and shift to overdrive for cruising
You don't need to rev math or heel toe if you don't want to, and you'll be just as slow as an automatic.
manuals are cheaper to run and better in the snow

Won't get a job, no GF (kissless virgin), no money, relies on other people for pretty simple stuff on life because he has no motivation to figure things out for himself or lacks the self-confidence to find out. Sitting in a one-bedroom apartment eating processed foods and watching cartoons and playing video games is better than what everyone else in our friend-circles are doing; partying, driving cars for fun, drinking, women, social contacts and hobbies, living in something else than a small shithole.

They claim that their parents wanted them to learn stick because it would make them better drivers or some shit. Too bad none of them realize that their parents were just cheap fucks who used an excuse to buy them cheap shitty cars.

Driving stick in rural areas or small towns isn't that bad. It's a pain in the ass to drive stick in a city though. There's too much stop and go and you'll never get up to speed to really use it.

this

i knew three different guys in high school who drove manual jeep wranglers in high school. manual fanaticism + jeep fanaticism = top autism. the shifting bounced your fucking head all over the place. you felt scared for your fucking life when they had to merge onto a fast highway. they would constantly ask you to dial their phone for them or hand them their beef quesarito because shifting. no fucking reason.

It's ridiculously easy to drive stick in a city if you're not a complete fucking retard. People always make it sound so much harder than it actually is. It becomes second nature pretty quickly if, again, you aren't completely retarded.

>It can be more efficient than coasting in gear if you shut down the engine while coasting doown a hill.
>coasting down a hill with your engine off and nothing driving the brake pump or PAS pump

Wew.

For what it's worth, when you are rolling down a hill (in cars with fuel injection) in gear and with the throttle closed, the ECU will not inject any fuel into the cylinders until the engine speed is at idle.
>>
>>35172014
Indeed, but that slows the car down, wich means you have to accelerate later.
>>
>>35172073

Not if you're going downhill, which is the whole point.
>>
>>35159118
>press in gas pedal

Autotragics. Not even once.

Why do we have to argue about this? Just get the kind you like the most. I use automatic because it's less tedious to use for me. Most of the time when I get in the car it's because I have to go do something that I'd really rather not do, so I'm already not in the best of moods because of that. If I have to manually shift on the way there I'd be more annoyed with it all. Manuals just don't suit me because I'm not the sort of person who enjoys driving and I never go out to drive around just for fun.
>>
>>35173232
Can't you just let me be autotistic about it?
>>
My old Buick shat the bed over the summer. Was my college car, finally rusted out to the point where even the guy who sold it to me wouldn't let it pass inspection. Went out shopping and took home a 2006 hatchback Impreza (non-turbo'd, couldn't afford it ;_;) with a manual tranny. Learned to drive it over the course of the week. Never looked back. Automatics are just so incredibly dull to drive now.

then my sister got me driving gloves because she knows I loved Drive, and now my secret shame is driving around late at night wearing them and listening to synthwave CDs that I burned for myself

I've also got a eurobeat disc that I sometimes do risky things while listening to

>I think its actually safer because you actually need to think about what you're doing. You cant just press the go pedal and shut off your mind.

If you have to think about driving stick, you either haven't been doing it for long, or you're just a terrible driver. After a pretty short amount of time, it becomes just as mindless as driving automatic.

>more durable
True, but not that relevant. Both types are durable enough to last the lifetime of most vehicles.
>longer lasting
This is the same thing as more durable
>cheaper
Very slightly. But balanced out by poor availability. Unless you're buying a very cheap car, or a sports car, good luck finding one with a manual.
>more fun
Completely subjective, and not always relevant. Not everyone drives for fun.
>aesthetic
Also completely subjective, and not really relevant because the selector on an automatic can look exactly like a manual gearshift.

>Paddle shifters

90% of cars with paddles will reject shifts, or shift for you anyway at high or low rpm. Also, only cars with a an electronically controlled manual transmission will engine brake like a normal manual. While you can engine brake with an automatic, it is much less effective due to the torque converter between the engine and trans.
