it's the same with dubs, and localization of manga and LNs

the creators make fractions of a penny on sales of dubs and localization and those localization are usually sub-par with crappy budget actors

just go with subs and pirate it, and if you want to support the industry, buy merchandise from Japanese sellers. Don't give your money to yen press, viz, funimation, or CR who take a hefty cut of the money first

Why are anime fans so mean?
I tried getting into anime by watching Jojo, and I noticed that people were posting a guy that looked like him named "josuke". So I asked, isn't the main character Jojo?, who is this? and I got so much shit for it. They didn't even explain what I did wrong. I STILL DON'T GET IT.

Localization will happen with or without places like CR being supported due to TV adaptations and enthusiasts who are both localizing it out of passion while still purchasing merch. Paying streaming website is predatory and generally detrimental to the creation of new series being made.

CR ruined fansubs because they used shady practices and put out low quality subs before everyone else
since speed is what matters in subbing, most fansub groups died out

dubs are a different matter and the vast majority are of a lower quality than the original

they use weird localization choices (think brock's jelly donuts in pokemon)
they use lower quality actors (C and D list if that instead of A list actors)
they have a lower budget

a few dubs are decent and even fewer are better than the original, but that's not the point

They're not stopping anyone from legitimately doing fansubs. It's just that the majority of fansubs were so bad that they just died off once CR raised the bar for "lowest common denominator" subtitles.

Fansubs are 98% based off of CR scripts now anyway, so you might as well just use HorribleSubs if you want to watch a show as it's coming out and if you have the money you might as well pay for the convenience of streaming from multiple devices.
