Also I'm pretty sure this is bait, but they wouldn't have been "counting down" to anything. They'd be counting up like we are now, since they didn't know the date they were supposed to even aim for. The Bible never prophesized the date when Jesus would come, not to mention the rest of the world isn't Jewish/Christian, so they wouldn't have used B.C./A.D. in the first place.

Fun fact, in the Islamic world, it's currently the year 1434, as their year is marked not by Jesus, but instead by Muhammad's emigration from Mecca to Madina, which is known as the Hijra.
