I moved here when I was 16 (which was 5 years ago) and dropped out of high school here. It's pretty interesting, but not foreigner-friendly at all. Even if you can speak the language. I currently have citizenship because I married a japanese girl.

It's pretty hard to find a job here for a foreigner, but I'm a hs dropout, so if you have a degree and skills and experience, it might be easier for you. There are companies that hire english speakers as teachers etc.

Since you can understand "a decent amount of Japanese", the biggest hurdle would be finding a company that would be willing to sponsor your visa. You could look into foreign companies with offices in Japan or search around for Japanese companies that are specifically looking to hire foreigners. I can understand about 95% of what's on japanese tv. It's been 5 years, and I still speak english to the people i'm most comfortable with. I can speak spanish too, and speak it with my aunt.

Should mention that when I first moved here, I had jack shit interest in learning nihongo, and put in very little effort in learning, and only learned through being completely immersed in the language. And Osaka is really japanese.

I've met foreigners living here for less than a year, and go to an school which actually teaches nihongo, and they seem almost fluent.
