Is it typical for a person to get really negative when they have nothing to distract them? If I'm not playing vidya I feel like shit.
I'd say it's typical. Notice the people you've known in your life. They're always distracting themselves with some kind of stimulus. Few people feel comfortable disengaging and embracing nothing. If you meditate, this becomes more tolerable and it can help you recognize why nothingness makes you feel so shitty.

Go make a thing. Grab a block of wood and a knife and start carving.

Yes. The base state is discomfort. That's why we keep striving the whole time, in between the womb and the tomb.

When I'm like that and alone at home I start walking around and talking to the mirrors. It's pretty comfy.
I hate when I'm in your situation and with people at home, like right now, but loneliness is pretty soothing for me.
